The Ropes Mansion and Garden of Salem, Massachusetts are, well, a mansion and attached garden that you can visit in Salem, Massachusetts. If that appeals, you might want to stop by.
It’s a beautiful three-story manor house in the middle of town, so the garden is large by urban standards if not by country standards.
Sadly, when I was there, the house wasn’t open to visitors. So instead, I spent a wonderful 15 minutes just sitting in the garden as gardeners bustled about touching up the place. The garden was, sadly, not at its best; most of the beds were bare stretches of dirt. But I can’t hold that against them; sometimes you just hit a place when it’s in transition.
It makes a lovely breather from the sometimes heavy, sometimes kitschy, sometimes touristy other features of Salem. A nice, quiet place to relax.
