You may have heard that the Amish—especially the Pennsylvania Dutch—are famous for their baking. But often, you’ll come across a corner of a store or a roadside stand that offers only a few pies or pieces of fudge.
Well, the Amish Market just west of Annapolis is one of the places where you can sample a huge variety of Amish cooking, both premade and made on the spot for you. You can buy everything from pies to sweet loaves to candy to kettle corn, plus flour, tea, and other kitchen staples. You can even buy fresh meat.
I got there mid-morning and discovered they’ll cook up breakfast for you. I had an egg and sausage scramble that was inside a pretzel tube, sprinkled with big pretzel salt. Incredibly flavorful and filling, and worth the 15-minute wait.
One important administrative item to know: each section of the market is run by a different Amish family, and you pay for each section’s items at its own checkout counter. So don’t do what I did and bring half a dozen items from all over the market to one counter. The teenage girl working there was perfectly gracious, but it was an unnecessary trip.
Everything I bought was excellent. If it were closer I’d go here every week.
